We got the .5 GB mem since this should suffice largely for our documents however, in the panel I can see it already uses 2000 MB swap idle and about 250MB on simple schema creation It says that mem + swap should not exceed total mem we got... if I am not totally wrong it is already over by 1250MB How can this work? What am I missing?

The important word here is "idle"... Idle swap is ok. You only want to make sure used swap + used ram is below total ram available
