Hello guys! This may be a nonstarter for you but I just wanted to throw it out there.
Despite the fact that Typesense is a great product I think it may have a bit of a discoverability/aesthetic issue. Let's take the name "Typesense", for example, I can definitely understand what you were thinking when you picked it, it hints at the instant search-as-you-type experience, characteristic of e.g. Algolia, but I always felt like it sounds a little too "narrow" or specific, if you will, Typesense isn't just limited to that particular use case, and it's also a bit ambiguous on its own, "Typesense" could just as well be the name of a TypeScript competitor (lol) or a keyboard brand.
What do you think about the name "Searchist"? It's one word, it sounds cool, and it's very descriptive of what the software does (it's also more generic but at the same time less ambiguous than Typesense). The GitHub org username is (surprisingly) available (
github.com/searchist), and domains like
searchist.io and
searchist.dev are available too. Most of the other competitors of Typesense have incorporated the word "search" into their brand names (e.g. Meilisearch, ElasticSearch, ZincSearch, etc.), and the nice thing is that "Searchist" is a single word, unlike those others (and also has fewer syllables), which makes it even better and catchier than other ones in my opinion,
it feels "canonical", if you know what I mean.
The current GitHub links and also the domain
typesense.org could trivially be configured to redirect to the new ones, and the fact that the name Searchist is actually available and not used by any major platform/product makes this a pretty enticing opportunity, I think. I was just curious whether you'd be open to a potential rebranding.
Just a random thought. Would love you know what you think.
