Inquiring about Typesense Versioning and Use Cases

TLDR Pete asked about Typesense versioning and customer use cases. Jason clarified they are in 0.x versioning due to potential future changes despite being production-ready. They also shared several use cases.

Another concern is the versioning of typesense. Looks like it is early in its maturity. Can anyone get with me on who your customers may be, how your customers have been using typesense. Is it mainly search in a global nav? Anything would help. Been reading your documentation and media but it'd be great to hear directly from you on the use cases you support for your active customers.

Great question about the versioning. Despite the 0.x versioning scheme we’re using currently (more on why below), Typesense is already production ready - we have teams using Typesense in production successfully at scale. For eg, on Typesense Cloud, we serve ~250M requests per month. I’ve heard some self-hosted users do as much as 6000 requests per second using Typesense. I’ve also seen users index 100s of millions of documents successfully.

The reason we’re sticking to the 0.x versioning for now is because we want to reserve the ability to potentially introduce backward incompatible changes as new versions come out, even though we try and minimize these changes as much as possible. For eg, the last major breaking change was when we switched from a primary-replica model to a distributed systems model in v0.11

re: use cases for Typesense, I’ve seen users use Typesense for

• Global nav search
• Faceted navigation like in this demo: https://ecommerce-store.typesense.org/
• Search for logged-in users for specific fields (contact search, phone number search, etc)
• Search inside of tables
And more that I probably can’t remember off the top of my head now
